More laws mean less freedom. Equality is the enemy of liberty. New government programs send us hurtling down the road to serfdom.
Or so we’re often instructed. But political theorist Don Herzog briskly shows that these and other familiar arguments are simply mistaken. These mistakes are usually enlisted to support right-wing policies. Not always, though, and bashing conservatives isn’t his motivation. Instead, Herzog wants us to think more clearly about our political problems and possibilities.
We can do that, he urges, once we stop relying on mistakes.
